SPH Loop Trail
Find Threats to Human Health and Neutralise Them
Our people are motivated to find threats to human health and neutralise them

The best part of Victoria Peak is the loop trail on a clear day. The view combines the best of natural and human artifice in one vista. My personal loop trail has been 40 meetings in the last 20 days with nearly every member of faculty as part of professional reviews. There is a grandeur to the wide span of our research, teaching, and practice. But the expanse is anchored and unified to a very human concern to make the world better. Our people are motivated to find threats to human health and neutralise them. Those threats range from emerging avian viruses to the social isolation faced by seniors. Problems yield not only to demand for facts, but to the insistence on communicating those facts clearly.

I am so thrilled by the view on the SPH loop trail that I want everyone to see it. I doubt anyone will take the time to crawl over all the school’s web pages, but I do hope this newsletter’s issues can make you curious to click in. Our research output and curriculum are a stunning vista of human minds encountering nature and humanity to make sense of it and to make better lives.

EVENT SNIPPETS

Knowledge Exchange on Primary Healthcare System
Colombia Professor Inspired BASc(GHD) Students

The School was delighted to have Professor Luis Gabriel Bernal-Pulido from Rosario University – Bogotá, Colombia, as our guest speaker on February 2, 2024. He shared his extensive knowledge on “Foundations and Features of a High Performing Primary Healthcare System” with our BASc(GHD) students, shedding light on the essential components, including accessibility, quality, and community engagement, that contribute to an effective primary healthcare system.

Professor Bernal is a family physician with extensive clinical and managerial experience in primary and community health care services. He has worked for the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Colombia, and served as consultant for the World Bank Group. Our students were engaged in the lecture, actively participating by asking thought-provoking questions, and gained insights on understanding global health development from an international expert.
